A very short tutorial - thin border to frame your DP's

You probably have noticed that I always have a thin border framing the designer papers on my cards.  Quite a number of people have asked me how I create the border--which surprised me because I thought everybody knew how to do this already.  I guess I've been doing it for so long that I don't think about it anymore...LOL...and forget that not everyone is in the same boat.

Simply put...it's just a matter of having your designer paper slightly smaller than your background cardstock, approximately 1/8" (or 2 to 3mm smaller).

And ladies, I do this the hard way...LOL...by using my small scissor and do the cutting by hand.  It's time consuming, but I do like how it makes the cards look, so I think it's worth doing the extra work.
Straight edges are easy to do--you can use your kraft knife and a ruler.  But for curves/shapes, you use your small scissor.

There are 2 ways of making the slightly smaller shapes:

1st Method.
Pencil draw the inside edge of your die.  Then cut along the drawn line.

2nd Method
Cut and embossed using your die and die-cutting machine.  Then cut along the embossed outline.

If you want an even thinner border, say 1/16", then cut somewhere between the outside edge and the pencil-drawn/embossed line.

Once you've done this hundreds of time...hee hee, you get to be good at judging the border width that you won't need to make the pencil/embossed lines anymore--at least that's how it is with me.

I like to ink distress my edges first before glueing/attaching the shaped DP onto the shaped cardstock.

The only time I get a break from having to handcut and am able to use my dies is when I do plain and scallopped circles and ovals.  I can use my Spellbinders dies then, because they do make them in 1/8" increments.

There you go!  Happy creating!

Magic Card - Magnolia-licious July Colour Challenge

Hello.

It's the second Tuesday in July and it's time for a new colour challenge at the Magnolia-licious Challenge Blog.  Here's the card that I created.

Suzan is our hostess of the month.  She has chosen the colour combo of red, white and blue for the challenge.  I hope you will play along with our challenge--you have a couple of weeks!  For inspirations, have a look at the fabulous cards of my DT teammates displayed at the challenge blog HERE. Diana is offering a $25 Gift Certificate for her store Magnolia-licious to the lucky winner.

This Magnolia image that I've coloured with my markers is of Tilda Loves Flowers--just like me...LOL

This style of card was created by Marianne and she calls this a 'secret card'.  I found her tutorial for it HERE at the Scandinavian on-line magazine StampARTic.

A side view here so you can see the layers.

The fold of the card is at the top.

This image is of the adorable Tilda as a Star.

Both of the Tilda's I've coloured here are from the Sweet Crazy Love Collection 2012.  The stamps for the images are available from Magnolia-licious, Diana's on-line store.  Check out her store for her excellent selection of full-size and mini Magnolia stamps, as well as cutting dies from Memory Box, PoppyStamps, Magnolia, Marianne Design and Cheery Lynn.  The prices are discounted and as a bonus you also earned 2% credit to be applied to future purchases.  Sweet!

Gate-Fold with Window Card Tutorial

Hello!

A few people asked me how I created the card in my previous posting, so this is a tutorial on a gate-fold card that has a shaped window.  Since the usual gate-fold card is easy enough to do and there are already lots of tutorials on it (here, here and here are just a few), this tutorial is really on how to create the window on the card using one of your shape dies.  I'm assuming that's what the requests were for--if not, then let me know please.  BTW this is easy too...LOL!

This is for a 6" x 6" card.  I am creating a new Christmas card and will give you the step-by-step instructions in making it.

Materials required:
- 6" x 12" cardstock
- DP's, coloured image(s), embellishments, sentiments, etc. to decorate
- a shape die for your window (I am using the Spellbinders 2011 Heirloom Ornament die to match my image of Tilda Hanging Ornaments)
- removable tape
- die-cutting machine (I am using my Big Shot Machine)

Step 1
Score your cardstock at 3" and 9".

Step 2
Fold along scorelines.

Step 3
You may want to leave your card as a square card or if you want to shape your card, you can do it now.  In my previous card I used a Go Kreate die to shape the top and bottom of the card.  With this one, I am just going to round off the corners.

Step 4
Decorate the card front with your DP.

Step 5
Place a couple of pieces of removable tape on the flat side of your die.

Step 5
Open your card and place your die--and this very important!--blade side up.  With this card, I am putting the die exactly in the centre.  In my previous card I have placed the die higher up.  You can place it wherever you want your window to be.

Step 6
Close the two front flaps and press so the removable tapes will stick to the paper on top and the die won't move.  Run the card through your die cutting machine.

Step 7
Voila you have your window!

And from here you can now decorate the card any way you want.  Have fun!!!

Sorry, but this is as far as I got with the card--I haven't finished it yet...LOL.  I am currently working on another project that I have to get done first--this was a detour.  I will get back to this and show you the card when finished.

Edited:  Here's my finished card.  I will give the details in a separate posting.
Edited again:  Posting for card HERE.
